PRESENTS MOTHER’S DAY POWER LUNCHEON/FASHION SHOW ___________________________by Invitation Only___________________________
Sunday, April 26,1998 Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino
The National Minority Cancer Awareness Week (NMCAW) is announced by the National Cancer Institute each year. It is a week in which all coalitions of the NBLIC nationally are expected to present some activity to raise health awareness within the African American Community.
This year, the Las Vegas Coalition, has decided to hold a Mother’s Day Power luncheon-fashion show in which we will be celebrating “life” with our mothers and cancer survivors. We will have a medical doctor as speaker and we will be honoring our facilitators from the Conference last year. Awards will be presentedfrom the Western Regional Office. Pha Patrick, MS, is our new Western Regional Director.
We will be receiving approximately $4,000.00from the Nevada State Health Department for other expenses and we have requested a grant from the National Office, NBLIC.
The Southwest Region, American Cancer Society, Phoenix will be granting us a minimum of $1,000.00 toward the luncheons as this affair will be entirely free to the participants. The cost of the luncheons will be approximately $2,000.00. Some printing and other expenses are being donated by the Las Vegas Office of the American Cancer Society.
We request help from Theta Theta Omega in financing 100 luncheons for our participants. We are requesting a $400.00 donation as outlined in the budget and would appreciate having the check cut today.

GROWTH AND

Volume 1, Issue 1
October 1998
To begin the story, the
NBLIC is a cancer prevention
and control program
established by the Advisory
Board in 1989 as a result of
concern expressed during
previous meetings by various
board members.

The concern dealt with the
incidence and mortality rates
of cancer between whites
and other ethnic groups. They found a wide gap among
the whites and minorities with African Americans succumbing
to the disease in greater numb^s than whites.
They set about to lower the gap by establishing the NBLIC.
Since its inception in 1989 as an outreach initiative of the
National Cancer Institute, the NBLIC has proven to be an
effective channel to transfer prevention and control technology
to underserved communities and to provide those communities
with access to education and service.
WHEN. WHERE, AND HOW NBLIC BEGAN
The story of the National Black Leadership Initiative on
Cancer (NBLIC) is really the story of the National Cancer
Institute’s Advisory Board and
their problem solving.

The NBLIC’s program, “Make a Difference Workshop", on Saturday, October 24, 1998 at the Victory Missionary Baptist Church, Las Vegas was highly successful in that we had approximately 30 persons present and Dr. Fowler invited us to come back next year.
On Friday, October 16, 1998, a meeting was held at the EOB, 1818 Belzar and was well attended by most minorities. The purpose was to discuss the feasibility of establishing a steering committee to seek ways of establishing a Nevada State Department of Minority Health.
On Thursday, October 29, 1998, a second meeting was held at the University of Nevada (Reno) Cooperative Extension Office, 2345 Redrock. Plans for moving forwardwith this project were begun. Carla Freeman, a new employee of the Clarke County Health District from Portland, Oregon was unanimously chosen as facilitator due to past experience with the City of Portland. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, November11, 1998 at 1:00 PM at the same place. All interested persons are invited to attend.
A survey sheet has been passed out and I am requesting each soror to fill it out now and return to me. Your cooperation is appreciated.
I leave for Atlanta, GA on Thursday, November 12, 1998 for the First National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer National Leadership Conference, “Cancer Prevention and Control Through Community Leadership: A Challenge for the year2000” where I have been selected to present a paper on the 1997project of the Las Vegas Coalition known as “Nevada’s First African American Wellness Conference".
