AKATEEN REPORT
October 1999
The AKATEENS met in September 25, 1999, at the North Las Vegas Library. The tea was held to invite interested young ladies to join the group. There were ten young ladies in attendance. The committee presented a wonderful program for the young ladies.
The young ladies were given handouts and a Fact Sheet about the AKATEEN program. The Fact Sheet will be included in the next newsletter.
The next AKATEEN meeting will be held at the North Las Vegas Library on October 9, 1999, at 1:30pm. Each young lady has been asked to bring a friend to this meeting.
Sorors can also invite a young lady to join this group by attending the next meeting. We will hold one other membership recruitment meeting and than anyone else wishes to join will have to wait until after the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade. A permanent meeting place is still needed for this group.
BUCKLE UP MONTH
November is AKA Buckle up Month
What will happen:
Chapter members and the AKATEENS will distribute information throughout the Las Vegas community reminding people of the importance of Carseats and Seatbelts. The distribution will occur during the month of November.
I have written a letter to the National Transportation Commission to obtain the Buckle Up Kits. They should arrive by the end of this month and a plan will made in regards to the distribution process.
We will include some of the kits in the Thanksgiving Baskets that we will be preparing. We will also make Kits available to the other Black Greek Organizations in the City.
Any suggestions for distribution can be given to Ina Dorman or Jacqueline R. Hall.
AKATEEN REPORT
NOVEMBER 1999
The AKATEENS met on October^, 1999, at the North Las Vegas Library. This was the last meeting where new members could attend. There are now twenty-seven AKATEENS.
October 1999, the AKATEEN delivered blankets to the St. Vincent’s Shelter for men. This was their community service for Make A Difference Day. The blankets were generously donated by the Luxor Hotel and Casino.
The AKATEEN committee met on November 5, 1999, at the home of Soror Jacqueline Hall. We discussed upcoming community service projects, social activities, and workshops. The committee consists of Sorors Tina Rimmey and Rhoda Anderson who will be in charge of the social/cultural activities; Sorors Belisa Brownlee and Amanda McWilliams who will head up the community service projects, and Sorors Lisa McNeil and Jacqueline Hall who will be in charge of arranging the workshops for the AKATEENS.
The next meeting was held today, November 6, 1999, at the florist business owned by Soror Donyss Rucker. She is allowing to AKATEENS to meet at the shop at no cost. This is a great saving to the sorority as we were paying $15.00 an hour at the North Las Vegas Library. We have also had an offer from West Middle School to use their facilities on a week night. We will not be using the school at this time, but, may need to use it in the future.
The young ladies chose a T-shirt logo and the T-shirts will be printed and distributed hopefully by the next meeting. The young ladies will also be getting jackets for use in the Martin Luther King Junior Parade.
The AKATEENS next community service will be decorating and distributing Thanksgiving Baskets on November 19, and 20th. This decorating and distribution point will be the home of Soror Lisa Russell. The next workshop will be the Economics Workshop on December 11th.
