Description

Keny Stewart often sits in his backyard and hears the train whistle. In that moment he thinks about what Las Vegas must have been like in the 1940s—a moment made more meaningful by living in historic John S. Park Neighborhood. He enjoys his place, a place he has called home for 20 years. He was there for the beginning of the neighborhood "renaissance". Keny moved from California to Las Vegas in 1984 to work as an entertainer. One day a few years later he accidentally drove through John S. Park neighborhood, admired the architecture of the homes and the nostalgic feeling. Soon he was a homeowner, restoring his investment, a labor of love. At the time he worked nights on the Strip and restored his house day. Along the way he made a career change to educator/librarian for grade school level. The John Myron Papers (1928-1979) contain his educational records from Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and University of Nevada, Reno. Included are grades, essays and reports, a teaching manual, and certificates. Also included are his Naval records from the service as a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserves during and after World War Two.

Oral history interview with Theron and Naomi Goynes conducted by Claytee White on June 28, 2012 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. Both Theron and Naomi Goynes discuss being African-American educators with Theron recalling his position as a North Las Vegas City Councilman. They also discuss the progression of school integration and special reading programs for students.

Abstract

The Hazel Baker Denton Photograph Collection (1910-1961) is comprised of photographic prints and one negative of the Denton family and friends, primarily taken in Nevada and Utah. Many photographs depict life in small Nevada towns, particularly Caliente. Photographs also depict Utah, Oregon, Washington D.C., and California, and unidentified desert and forest landscapes throughout the American West.
