Description

Steven Eisen (1966 - ) is the oldest son of Barry and Beverly Eisen, who were part of the migration of Jews from St. Louis to Las Vegas in the 1960s. He is married to Stacy Fisher and the older brother to Andrew and Robert Eisen. They are members of an early group of born-and-raised Las Vegans. Growing up Jewish, he became a bar mitzvah, belonged to B?nai B?rith Youth Organization. In this oral history interview, Steve recalls enjoyable stories of growing up in Las Vegas and humorous anecdotes of mistaken identity since the three brothers bear such strong physical resemblances. Today he finds himself enjoying his career as CEO of the Children?s Heart Center since 2001 and talks about the success and reputation of the pediatric medical group. It was his first job as a fourteen year old helping Theodore Manos and Michael Cherry during the MGM fire litigations where he learned about the legal world and being organized as a path to success in whatever he might pursue. Steve graduated from University of Missouri, attended law school at Washington University in St. Louis, and received his business degree from UNLV. Throughout the interview, he recalls the steady and strong involvement of his parents in their sons? educations. He also describes their active connection with the Jewish community and organizations. Steve?s wife Stacy is a professor in physical therapy at Touro University.

Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated (AKA), is one of the oldest Black sororities in the United States, and was

founded on January 15, 1908 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. AKA is an international service

organization that comprises nearly 300,000 members in over 1,000 graduate and undergraduate chapters

worldwide.

Theta Theta Omega originally started in 1962 when six members of AKA sought to create a graduate

chapter in Las Vegas, Nevada. AKA recruited members by posting notices throughout the Clark County

Gorme, Eydie

Eydie Gormé, née Edith Gormezano, was born August 1, 1928 in the Bronx, New York City. She passed away in Las Vegas in 2013 at the age of 84.

Eydie’s parents were Sephardic Jewish Immigrants from Turkey. She graduated from William Howard Taft High School in 1946 where she was the swing bands lead female vocalist. While attending college, Eydie used her fluency in Spanish as interpreter with the United Nations. She also sang in bands during her free time. She had a gift for both Spanish and singing.

An oral history statement conducted by herself. Lucile Whitehead Bunker (b. 1907 in Overton, Nevada), at the request of Doreen Day, provides an oral history statement about her experiences growing up and living in Southern Nevada. Bunker recalls her first experiences in Las Vegas and Overton and talks about her family, specifically about her mother, an ice cream maker, and father, the first assessor of Clark County. She then speaks about her various positions, including being a secretary at a school and law firm, a schoolteacher, and a deputy county clerk. She also describes her experiences as the wife of former Senator Berkeley Bunker, particularly living in Washington, D.C. where she met several presidents and attended several events with other lawmakers’ wives. Bunker additionally talks about her missionary work in her church and the various locations to which she travelled. She concludes the statement by talking about her interests in china painting, the early above-ground atomic testing, and the building of Hoover Dam.
