Description

Before moving to Las Vegas, Judith Boyer graduated from the University of Southern California where she received a degree in business merchandising. She grew up in the Los Angeles area as an only child and discusses Southern California, married life and traveling. Judith moved to Las Vegas in November of 1948, worked at Ronzoni's Department Store on Fremont Street and then got the chance to work for Bonanza Airlines as a stewardess. Hostessing for an airline was her dream job and she did it for two years, but gave it up to marry Karsten Bronken and start their family. She discusses Las Vegas as it was in the 1950s. Her memories encompass great stories about the city when people still rode horses around town, participated in Heldorado Parades and enjoyed the early hotels and casinos that were so different from those of today. After her first husband passed away, Judith married Dr. Harold Boyer, who was a dermatologist in Las Vegas for many years. She shares several memories and anecdote

Hailing from Indiana and California, Donna Guiffre Martin and Tom Martin came to Las Vegas in the early 1950s as their parents sought new opportunities. Donna's father, Gus Guiffre, quickly established himself as a local television personality, while Tom's father took on a variety of entrepreneurial opportunities. Like many of the young people in Las Vegas, Donna and Tom enjoyed riding around town; horse-back riding; football games; Helldorado - and, of course, Rancho High School. This interview covers both Donna and Tom's early years before their moves to Las Vegas, as well as their memories of first homes, childhood experiences, early adulthood and their current lives.

Transcribed from behind the image, "'Mrs. Tom Wah (Gue Gim) in front of the school house- Prince Mine, Pioche, Nevada, (with negative). This is the silk Brocade dress Gue Gim was married in in San Francisco in 1916. She brought It with her to Prince along with other silk dresses, but they were all lost in a fire in 1927.' Transcribed from behind the image,"'Tom Wah and Gue Gim Wah, his wife-when Tom's Chinese boarding house at the Prince Mine burned down, he moved into Prince one-room schoolhouse to serve meals (briefly one summer) later purchased the mine store from Hodges and Cook where a more adequate boarding house was again established- Tom died soon after. This photo taken in front of Prince schoolhouse, Pioche, Nevada.' Handwritten note by Elizabeth Gemmell Frizzell."
