Patricia and Herman van Betten oral history interviews

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Patricia and Herman van Betten conducted by Claytee D. White on February 6 and 20, 2007 and by Barbara Tabach on February 4, 2013 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In these interviews, Patricia van Betten discusses her participation in The League of Women Voters, the Consumer League, the Welfare Rights Movement, and the Community of a Hundred. Herman van Betten discusses his work with the Clark County School Board, the foundation of the English department at Nevada Southern University (University of Nevada, Las Vegas) and his role as director of the Clark County Community College (CCCC). The couple also talk about their upbringings, education, marriage, and family, local history in Las Vegas, their life-long involvement in Democratic politics, and their joint appointment by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) as Civil Libertarians of the Year.

Scope and Contents

This series is comprised of material from 1980 to 1991 pertaining directly to Ruby Duncan. It includes a Bannerman Award application from 1989, miscellaneous correspondence, including a letter from B.B. King, files relating to Jesse Jackson and the Rainbow Coalition and the National Organization for Women (NOW). There is also a file that contains speeches delivered by Ruby Duncan and material relating to the "White House Conference on American Families," which Duncan served on in 1980.

Abstract

Ann Brewington Papers (1984-1987) consist of letters and clippings related to Nevada history. Correspondence is primarily from Anne Brewington's sister, Ida Brewington, to Brewington regarding Ida Pittman's death. This collection also contains a letter from Florence Cahlan and copies of letters sent to Cahlan about an article she had written on Ida Brewington Pittman. Also included is another article about Pittman that appeared in the December 2, 1984 Nevadan that has a few hand written notes in the margins, as do a few of the letters.
