Abstract

The Hal Erickson Correspondence (1967-1993) documents Erickson's role in higher education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The collection includes letters addressed to Hal Erickson from various Nevada politicians and educators relating to the possible acquisition of materials for the UNLV Special Collections and Archives, service on various boards, and congratulations on his impending retirement. The collection also includes materials that document Erickson's involvement with the national and Clark County Democratic conventions.

In this interview Pauleen Foutz talks about family life in Las Vegas, Nevada, the history of Southern Nevada, and social and religious life in Las Vegas. She also discusses her career as a school teacher, businesswoman, and genealogist. Foutz also discusses her involvement with the establishment of the Mormon Church in Las Vegas.

Description

Oral history interviews with Olivia Díaz conducted by Nathalie Martinez and Barbara Tabach on August 31 and September 14, 2020 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. In the first interview, Díaz gives her family and personal history, growing up in Las Vegas but often visiting her family in Durango, Mexico for extended stays. She recalls her matriarchal upbringing, particularly while living in Mexico, and what life was like growing up and going to school in East Las Vegas and at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). Subjects discussed include: Mexico; Latina identity. In the second interview, Díaz talks about her English language education career for the Clark County School District (CCSD) and the events that led her to run for Nevada Assembly and Las Vegas City Council. She is presently Nevada's Assemblywoman for District 11 and Las Vegas' Councilwoman for Ward 3. Olivia concludes her interview with insights into her political and educational goals for the community and the initiatives she has focused on in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Stephen Schneider conducted by Stefani Evans on October 10, 2017 for the Building Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Schneider discusses his early life and English education. He recalls arriving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1967, being an English teacher at Bishop Gorman High School, and his early interest in real estate. Schneider talks about obtaining his real estate license and forming Berkshire Hathaway Americana Group Realtors. Lastly, Schneider discusses Special Improvement Districts.

Description

Interview with Lee Gray conducted by Claytee D. White on November 20, 2006. Gray came to Las Vegas as a child in the 1950s and attended school at Westside Elementary, K. O. Knudsen Jr. High, and Rancho High School. Following high school, Gray worked for Bob Williams during the summer, helping with Bob's comedy act. After two years of college at Central Arizona College in Glendale, Gray transferred to Regis College in Denver, Colorado, where he worked as a teacher's aide for a school district before returning to Las Vegas to work at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Beginning in grounds keeping, Gray rose to become supervisor of UNLV's HV/AC Department.

On March 16, 1978, Susan Vogel interviewed Helen Cecil (born November 4, 1916 in Silver City, Utah) in her home in Las Vegas, Nevada. She relocated to Las Vegas with her parents for health reasons. This interview covers family life, education, employment and the growth and development of Las Vegas. Helen attended Las Vegas High School and then went on to work at the Las Vegas High School for many years, an accomplishment that she is extremely proud of. During the interview she also mentions the Boulder Dam, the Old Ranch, and the Westside.
