Sacred Places

The desert landscape of the Nevada Test Site is sacred to many different people. The Western Shoshone claim Newe Sogobia, including NTS land, under the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley. During protests, Western Shoshone tribal leaders often issue passports to the test site lands. For many faith-based activists who participated in the oral history project, the desert symbolizes religious commitment to the human struggle for peace.
