Outdoor Laboratory
For many project participants, the test site was as a huge outdoor laboratory. Sophisticated experiments were conducted at the site reflecting the development of scientific and technical knowledge of nuclear science during the Cold War. The site was divided into areas dedicated to different laboratories and activities. Examples of experiments other than nuclear tests were the Nuclear Rocket Development Station in Area 25, “Jackass Flats,” at the southwest corner of the site and the Environment Protection Agency Farm in Area 10 in the northeast section of the NTS.
